For all the foldables that existed till now, only apples feels like a good ratio both open and close. Samsung fold doesn’t count as they manufacure the iPhone displays and as usual released them as their own just before apple.
Apple is a slow development company. Their strategy has never been moving fast on new trends. It’s too volatile. That being said it is kind of embarrassing when they show up so late to the game with this.

I’ve seen a few but it were never the type of people i expected. It weren’t nerds or techies or dudes with expensive cars, it was middle-aged women with presumably fake designer bags. Still haven’t figuresd out if these are the only people buying foldable phones or I am just not in an area that is representative of their typical buyers. At first I thought they were hand me downs from their husbands, but then I’d have seen at some point a man that might be said husband with one.

You need to see more people in your day to day life, then. I saw a lady on the subway that had a rectangular smart phone that folded in half to be a little square to stow in her purse.
Also, one of my friends has a fold out phablet for gaming.
The fact that I noticed and remembered both instances shows that phone makers have been doing a good job of inventing interesting and innovative hardware. The fact that there are only two instances for me to remember speaks to the fact that they have not been as successful at actually getting people to buy them.
I really do find it funny that I never see memes or comments making fun of any other company relating to phones.
Don’t get me wrong. I have had android phones, windows phones, and even PalmOS phones. I know Apple is always behind the times, their comment about copy and paste needing to be perfect before release drove me up a wall. If I remember correctly, it was a jailbreak developer that made copy and paste available on the iPhone a few years before officially being released.
However, I never see people make fun of other companies after they announce a new release. Yall must really hate Apple.

Isn’t this what Apple has been doing for decades now? Wait until tech stabilizes and doing it right? It tried to really innovate with the AR/VR headset and it flopped.

I don’t think they wait till smartphone and smart tablet are stabilised, when they do iphone and ipad, their competitors are still fumbling around with the tech but they somehow make it right. When they do vision pro the same thing is happening, their competitor(google glass, microsoft hololens) is still fumbling around with the tech, but this time they overestimated their own capability and also the demand of this thing.
You already had Blackberry, Symbian and Maemo before iPhone. Blackberry showed you can make a phone that’s a productivity device. Symbian showed you can create ecosystem of apps. Maemo and others showed you can have touch based interface. Those were all stable, popular products (maybe Maemo was more niche but N900 was a fully capable mobile phone).
Honestly, blackberry did productivity better than apple ever did, but blackberry was “too” secure and apple marketing was just too much for people to get past.
BlackBerry also lost because of the ecosystem, the App Store had so much more to offer than BlackBerry did. Also BlackBerry stuck to their physical keyboard, which in hindsight was a bad idea.

I just want a Blackberry Perl with a modern processor. That’s all I want. Compact, comfortable in my hand, intuitive physical navigation and typing. I’d pay a premium to get those "primitive " phone features back.
Apps are overrated. I’m ready to be done with the app ecosystem. Websites can tell the difference between a desktop and mobile user now, so why do I need a banking app on my phone when going to the bank’s website should be a functionally identical user experience?
The only thing app stores have done is create walled gardens that are now difficult to escape from and create anti-competitive advantages for Google and Apple.
Are you kidding? I would kill for modern phone with Blackberry keyboard. I mean there are couple of nice options now but nothing works with deGoogled OSes and I’m definitely not going back to stock Android… But I loved all BB phones, even the Android ones. The keyboards worked great and had sooo many great features. They had some models without keyboard but they just were not able to compete in Android market.
They released iphone after many competitors had half baked products in the market. Using capacitive touch with gestures like pinch zoom was absolutely brilliant.
For tablets, they waited until Microsoft’s attempt at tablet computers failed, and then they gave their own twist. I guess there was a time they actively learned from their competitors’ successes and mistakes.

They already had a superior trackpad on MacBooks, so this is an example of them being a first mover- nobody had combined those two technologies.
Apple actually claims to have developed the iPad before the iPhone, but the tech was moving fast enough to miniaturize it and release the phone first, I think mostly because everyone had been begging for an iPod-phone for years at that point.
They’d also been improving track pad and OS for years before the iPhone released. Bit to mention the Newton, which failed pretty fast.

Can’t really answer phone calls without a separate headset.
Can tell time, which is good for a watch. Has a battery life measured in hours, which is laughable for any modern watch.
Anything the Apple Watch can do is better served by the phone that you need to pair with the watch anyway, or a seperate mechanical or digital watch. Or just the phone. It takes 3 seconds to pull out a phone and look at the time.
And if you want heart rate monitoring or pulse oxygen readings: Fitbit did it first years before the Apple Watch. All Apple did was let you struggle to read text messages on a tiny screen that also tells you that your heart rate is elevated.

Can you say a little about basic usability? It seems like the outside screen wouldn’t do anything my watch doesn’t already do: the inside screen requires the extra maneuvering of opening it then using two hands
Maybe if I wasn’t already sold on a watch and a tablet, but I have a hard time seeing where this form factor adds anything
The outside screen is fantastic it’s just like your normal cell phone. So you lose nothing. But the advantage is when you want to watch videos or look at photos anything that you might marginally want to see a little bit more of you can just fold open the phone, it’s fantastic.
For example: If you’re trying to take a group photo and you want to know if everyone’s in the frame it’s infinitely easier when your phone screen is twice as large as a normal slab.
I frequently show photos to friends and family, browse the web, watch YouTube and it’s like having a tablet in my pocket.
If you ever sign digital documents it’s so much nicer to be able to actually read the thing on a larger screen to understand what you’re signing up for there’s so many use cases we’re having a larger screen improves user experience significantly, at least for me.
The only apps that don’t work well with foldable phones are typically banking apps because they have an optimized them for a wider screen format but to be honest if I’m looking at that type of data I don’t typically need or want a large format view. Otherwise it’s an advantage I’m pretty much every scenario. If you’re trying to navigate using Google maps you can just fold open your phone to figure out the route and get your grips easier because you can see more.
I can go on, I was skeptical when I bought it, I really thought it was going to be a gimmick to be honest and I was pleasantly surprised.
As far as durability goes, it depends on how you use phones. I’ve never broken a phone screen myself so I haven’t had a single problem with foldable phones either.
I see people using them with some regularity 🤷🏻♂️ not for me though.

You forgot the number 1 selling in China which is the Xiaomi fold. Currently in its 5th generation. I keep forgetting that most of the world is limited between Apple and Samsung. Strange that the so called ‘beacon of freedom and democracy’ has a whole lot less choice in basically anything like technology, EV’s, than the dictatoriaal, socialist nightmare: China. Apple is not even in the top 5 of best selling phones.
Most of the Chinese phones don’t ever make it out of China. For all the negativity in this thread, you see a lot of people using foldables in China. The latest Xiaomi fold 18, released last week, cost €1450.

How often is that, really? Seems like more of a meme than anything else. I use their products, and prefer their UI. Is it perfect? Obviously not. But I do enjoy the vertical integration. Handoff just works™. iMessage works well, etc.
There are plenty of features that Android does better, and plenty that it does not. The haters are going to hate regardless.

I think more often than not it’s more important to be early rather than being exactly the first. Unless you patent it in a way that makes it extremely hard to copy but software doesn’t really work that way a lot of times. Being first barely seems to give you any advantage long term. You just want to be early enough before the network effect takes hold, for example.
