As an 'Murican I think that would be great. That way the rest of the world can bypass weighing in on matters for which they lack the required frame of reference of living inside a giant gilded butthole.

As long as theres tags for every conceivable topic someone might not want to see. Like people whining about things in the guise of a showerthought.

Why is that? It should be very easy for the mods to see whether a post deals with U.S. issues and whether the appropriate tag was used.

Yes, but they need to all agree with it, which is rather unlikely. Tags or any kind of topic filtering beyond nsfw and blocking entire communities or instances aren’t a thing in the standard Lemmy UI anyway, which will lead to a lot of mods who agree with the basic idea being uninterested in enforcing it.

If the moderators are doing their job, there shouldn’t be any problems. As I’ve said before: Many communities have a “no politics” rule that actually causes more problems because it’s so arbitrary. The reason for this is essentially the completely absurd U.S. discours. It’s all about the insane spectacle that the U.S. regime passes off as politics. If that can simply be filtered out - provided no relevant tag has been assigned to a topic concerning the U.S. - then fruitful, civilized debates will once again be possible.

I think the Fediverse would simply facilitate better discussions if we could effectively filter out the clown show in the U.S. - those who are interested in this could still participate in it.

If the moderators are doing their job

If the moderators are doing their job they’re not moderating. Moderators here are volunteers, it’s not anyone’s job.

I am saying they are volunteers. It’s not their job. They moderate if and when they have time, but as long as you’re not paying them you don’t have the right to complain if they don’t have the time to implement your wishes.

It would be up to the creator of the post to tag it, or mods would need to tag every post. I don’t think either of those would work very well.

In large Lemmy communities, there’s a “no politics” rule that’s so broad it’s completely absurd. It would be much easier to simply remove all posts that discuss U.S. politics and don’t have the tag. That would make a lot more sense.

Good luck as a decent percentage of users are from all over the world, including the US.

That would be like reddit choosing to block all content coming out of the EU; it disenfranchises too many people.

It’s not about the ratio, when a post is specific to a location outside of the US, the OP includes the location 90% of the time. When yanks post stuff that is specific to the US, over half of the time they never mention that it is specific to the US. This platform would be so much more pleasant to use if yanks didn’t assume that they were the default and were just as considerate of other users as everyone else is.

I guess the limeys have a real shit education system for not understanding that more limey posts means more limey posts to read. it’s a shame really but unsurprising that the limeys would complain about there not being enough bureaucracy and how everyone should do it the limey way.

I have over 130 keyword based content filters that effectively do that. I probably filter out over two thirds of the posts here.

I’ve got that basically but also included every American state and major city. Filtering helps, but there’s still so many posts where the top comment is US politics even when the post is completely unrelated.

I’ve much fewer tbh, I just filter Trump, Elon, MAGA, and that removes like most of them. yours seems more thorough, though.

LGBT is a bit odd to filter, it usually has wholesome stuff, but that might be because I’m on Blåhaj.

Yes, but is it really necessary to go to all that trouble?

I think the Fediverse would be much more appealing to new users if they could just tune out all the hate and the utter absurdity of the US—then there would be relatively few posts left, but at least those that remain wouldn’t portray the world as the US billionaires want it to be.

It would also be a step in the right direction, because it’s completely obvious what the US oligarchs’ tactic is: distracting from the real problems through misinformation and hate.

So why shouldn’t people who don’t want any of that have a very simple way to avoid it?

Yes, but a Tag wouldn’t restrict freedom in any way. It would just make things easier.

By the way: You should make a post out of your blocklist and include the keywords in the description - I think that would be very helpful to a lot of people, since it’s pretty obvious that something like what I’m suggesting here will never be implemented.
