  • Slimbook looks interesting. If the parts are from Asia, I hope it’s Taiwan – this looks promising. They sadly advertise with an “AI” part, which, ew. But they seem good other than that.

Starlabs is also very interesting, they got a few privacy features. They’re UK-based, though.

Tuxedo seems like it’s good but mostly focused on people who just want a laptop that works.

Out of all options mentioned in this thread so far, those three seem like the best options - they offer Linux and are more European. I think I will go for the Starlabs one, the customisation is clear and easy, and they do have privacy features.

I think to everyone I’d tell:

    • Want a laptop that just works? Tuxedo.
    • Want to support open-source devs? Slimbook.
    • Privacy? Starlabs.

Dumb question, but are all of these laptops customisable in terms of OS? Like custom boots, etc? And what regarding their security?

  • I actually looked at the Nokia ones! But they don’t sell it on their site, and say they’re not the manufacturers nor retailers… However, another search explained to me that they use Windows. Yeah, no thanks.

Tuxedo seems interesting, but ugh, the chips are AMD or Intel, and those are both American… we really need European digital stuff makers. But other than that, they seem good, using Linux.

Medion seems to partner with Amazon, so no thanks.

SHIFT seems to have HP (American) and Lenovo (Chinese), so I’ll rule that out.

Wortmann is involved with Microsoft, so also a no-go for me.

  • You can have an income- and wealth-dependent fine.

It could be as a % of your total income (bonus included) + wealth (including stocks, full ownership chain included).

1.5% of income, 5% of wealth in bank account, 10% of stock value. If any of these three exceeds 300x the median of the lowest 10%'s salary (let’s say that that’s 10k), then it’s 80% for all three. That would hit the ultra-wealthy more and so it’d be fairer.

For a poor person earning less than €10,000 a year and having €1,000 in bank and no stocks, that’d be €200.

For someone earning €40,000 a year, having €80,000 in bank and €10,000 in stocks, that’d be €5,600.

For a billionnaire who has 1 billion, let’s say €2,000,000 per year as “income”, €100,000,000 in “bank account”, and the rest of 1 billion in stocks. Then they’d be paying € 801.6 million.

  • Sure, people can like what they want. Though I don’t think we should encourage inaction against the far right. Unfortunately, I’ve seen a few, but indeed very few. Personally I feel divided on tankies, but in my perspective, the greater foe is the fascist. That said: AAAB (All Authoritarians Are Bastards), and if we can combat both effectively, then great!

But also, to put it as a metaphor. If I had to pick my battles – and had three bullets, and there were a fascist and a tankie in the room with me, I’d shoot the fascist immediately, and keep two to safeguard against tankies - so that if I shot, I still have a credible threat afterward.

A tankie is an ally against a fascist, and can turn into a fiend - so let us make sure that they have to stay our friend. And while they are our friend, then let us treat them with at least kindness. They don’t need to like us and we don’t need to like them; but we need to band together against the storm.

  • Why don’t we discourage using X for all European citizens?

For the far-right users that still frequent it, we can just set up an alternative closed corner that is more moderate, populated by bots, and then have them go there, then cut off X altogether.

Then the algorithms will make them go more moderate.

    And also,

Needs more zeros. Make it a €100 billion fine. If Twitter can’t pay it, then Musk must pay it from his own personal wealth. Corruption poisons society, and society needs to purge corruption!

  • For all redditors and elsewhere who have come to PieFed or Lemmy, welcome! Don’t forget to contribute to the devs every now and then.

Lemmy/PieFed works like if you had multiple reddits (“instances”) talking to each other, and also to other non-reddits that are linked, like Friendica, Mastodon (this is “federation”).

    What Instance to Pick?

If you wanna find a good instance, my recommendation is: don’t go for the biggest one. Pick a mid-sized or smaller one, or find one yourself. This is a great guide on Github giving some pointers, including a “idc, just give me some instances” at the top.

If you still wanna pick yourself but there’s a bit too much, I recommend going for the instances with 20-1000 people. The smallest are either self-hosted or probably just friends/classrooms, and if it’s too big, might get issues with hosting costs.

    Apps
For Lemmy interfaces/apps, see here. I personally like Voyager, Mlem, and Thunder, but a lot of them are great. There’s even an old reddit-like look if you want. Here’s a list for the PieFed ones.

    Pro-tip: Block Some Stuff
Don’t be scared! Unlike with Reddit, the block options are a bit better. The following is a list of keywords I’ve put up to block. It’s pretty useful so far.

    List of keywords

    Trump
    Kirk
    ICE
    Elon
    Musk
    rapist
    Republican
    pedophile
    GOP
    Israel
    Hamas

    Block Sites

These will block the ones that pop up as links. I’m not going to directly link them, but either way here you go.
