Costco is considered one of the best places to work in America. Literally one of the highest job satisfaction rates in business.
They pay decently, offer good benefits, and treat their employees decently, and respectfully. So people stick around, that’s why they put their length of service on their name tags. It’s smart brand marketing, and it worked on you exactly like it’s supposed to.
Imagine a company recognizing that treating your employees well, might actually be good for business?
Here’s a kayak we’ve researched and you can be reasonably sure it’s decent. Costco buyers rarely fuck up at last compared to everyone else. I trust them.

This literally happened to my girlfriend.
She went in to Walmart to find a Black and Decker battery charger. She brought a battery from home to check if it fit. It turns out that Walmart does not sell Black and Decker products.
When she left she was stopped and accused of stealing the battery that they don’t even sell. She was detained by the police for almost an hour as they checked security camera footage to prove that she stole something that they, again, DON’T FUCKING SELL! They don’t even sell products made by that fucking company!
A one minute scan of their inventory would show that but they decided to waste everybody’s fucking time.

They’re likely exaggerating, but seriously, every time I go to Costco for a couple of things, I’m spending at least $200. I need to stop falling for the temptation to go inside every time I get gas.
I regularly fail the “spend less than $200 at Costco” challenge. It’s mostly groceries though. Except the collapsable chair with a sun shade and knockoff nerf bows, but those kicked ass so still no regrets.

Theyve been losing money on the food court for decades. Their entire profit model is driven almost exclusively by membership fees.
i used to work right across the street from one. i had the membership (cheap gas and all that) but just walking in and buying a sassage feels right.

I call fake, in a country where it is not possible to walk to a costco, one simply doesn’t go to the shop just for toothpaste.
You didn’t go there for a tube of toothpaste, you went there for a trunkful of toothpaste. You need to be well-stocked in case of emergencies.
It’s not that I want to stockpile, but Costco will literally sell me 6 months of toothpaste for the same price that my local shop will give me 1 month of toothpaste for. That’s just too big of a markup for me to handle.

I use one to two pea sized … Servings? I’m not sure what you call a single brushing session worth of toothpaste. Serving feels wrong, and so does dose, portions or squeeze.
I use one to two pea sized dollops of toothpaste two to three times a day. I know I should use a bit less but I can’t be bothered to not overshoot a little, and too little toothpaste feels like garbage.
Depending on what I eat for lunch and if I’m home I’ll brush after lunch.I’m willing to bet the biggest difference in duration of tubes is the brand. I know some of the specialty toothpaste tubes are literally a quarter the size of my standard issue toothpaste.
It’s a short trip for me, I definitely go for single items. Sometimes just for a hot dog. (Also the toothpaste is a 4 pack)
Not in costco, but it happened to me with lidl in europe.
Went with my wife and kids to get icecream a hot summer day, and we came back with a swimming pool, one of those you have to kinda build. Not big enough to swim but big enough for a bunch of people without being crowded and sit covered by water entirely.
Long story short, we cannot have such pool on our shitty uneven ground in the yard. At least we bought it with 50% discount so whatever.
Do people actually go to Costco for one thing tho… except maybe the food court? Can’t imagine myself doing a quick grab n go like I would at a CVS or 7-11.
Sometimes I’ll run in for just cat litter and a bag of coffee (the local ones carry a regional brand of whole bean coffee that’s okay for the price).
We have both Sam’s and Costco (we generally get different things at each), and they are just a couple of blocks apart, so if our bi-monthly shopping is heavy to one, I might only need a couple of items at the other.
I absolutely loved people watching in the food court where people would go there for a $5 roast and a $10 bottle of wine and that was all they came for.
I actually do sometimes depending what it is. For instance I’m low on kosher salt and we cook a ton so we only get it at Costco, I’m gonna stop by later this week for a box.
Be careful, you need a source of iodine in your diet, and hipster salts don’t have it.
I live in a rural area and my closest Costco is over an hour away. I go once or twice a month, usually when my husband is in town for work, we get everything we’ll need for that month since we’re not going often. If I were closer I’d go all the time because I love it there and I’m one of the lucky ones, mine is never crowded.
I used to never get out for less than $100. In my last place I lived across the street from a Costco and it changed everything. It wasn’t a special trip anymore and I could just pop in and grab lunch, it was great.

IT gets treated like absolute shit, worse than anywhere else I’ve ever done that sort of work, and the entire department agreed when I was there, but their skill sets are all Costco centric so they can’t seem to find anywhere else their skills map to. A manager tried to take their own life IN THE OFFICE recently according to one of my close friends that’s still there, apparently due to burnout and the disappearance of upward mobility, which is why I fucking left

I work in a Canadian Costco.
You get a dollar an hour raise every 1040 hours worked. Which at full time works out to every 6 months. So $2/hr in raises a year.
Next month I top out on the pay scale, after 4.5 years of employment. My wage will be $34.40/hr.
At that point my raises do go down to $1/hr per year.
In 2 years I start getting the long term employee payouts, which is $3,000 every 6 months.

Costco is publicly traded, anybody can buy their stock. Blackrock owning it should be irrelevant to public opinion of the company.
It’s also probably mostly BlackRock index funds. Which means tons of retail investors are part of this ownership.
Well, except that I’m theory, owning a lot of shares in a company gives you some leverage over that company to drive its policies and direction.

They treat their employees better, provide good products and services, and as far as I know are the only company who are even pretending to attempt to pass the tariff refunds along to their customers. It’s just not up to your ideal standard. Which is fine, we don’t live in a perfect world and should continue to push for the best.

Because bottom-up behavioral changes are an ineffective use of energy. Consumer-scale recycling, pushing people towards veganism, embracing mass transit, equal rights regardless of demographic… decades of effort and a losing battle. Societal change requires a legislative push, and that push is usually spearheaded by an organized group of regular people but they are pressuring Congress and businesses rather than shaming their neighbors.
Costco is nice but there are too many people in there. Sams Club is more chill even if they are Walmart.
In most respects sams club is just worse than costco in most ways.
