Saying “generic American accent” is about as valuable as someone doing a cockney accent and saying it’s generic British.
Not a single disc, but there’s been many games released on multiple discs for generations. As recently as FF7 Rebirth.
It’s both.
It’s currently in the courts in multiple countries. The accusation is that Valve has an unwritten rule that Steam must have the best retail prices. For example, Ubisoft, who runs their own platform, could not sell Assassin’s Creed on Steam for $60 and on Uplay for $50.
This would make some sense from Ubisoft’s position, as they don’t have to pay anyone a commission on their own store, and customers may be willing to come to them for a lower price than Steam. In this scenario, no Valve infrastructure is used for the Uplay sale.
So, again, the accusation (currently unproven, but alleged in court) is that Valve strong arms others into not being able to do this. Still it for cheaper on your own store or elsewhere that takes a smaller cut? We’re gonna kick you off Steam.
This is believable, because Steam commands a dominating user share. So the threat of losing access to those users is very powerful. It’s also believable because people don’t become billionaires by being ethical.
However, naturally, Valve denies this unwritten policy exists. The cases are ongoing.
They also profited like crazy from under age, unregulated gambling and did nothing to very little to curb it.

20·1 month agoIt’s kinda insane to me how successful tip propaganda is. 20%??
My whole life, 15% was considered a top tier tip. Prices have gone up on everything across the board, but tips are a percentage meaning 15% is still more money than it was twenty years ago, so why in the fuck has it gone from 15% for a great tip to 20% as a minimum?? So not only are prices higher, you want a higher cut of that higher price?? Insane.

23·2 months agoThe commenter said that the video shows the woman’s rope on the ground. The article makes no mention of that, but does mention a rope visible that is attached to the instructors.
I have not seen the video. The commenter or the article could be wrong, but it was a difference that felt worth mentioning for discussion.

4·2 months agoI will take your word from it and continue to refrain from watching a video of a woman being plunged to her death. Nothing about that sounds like worth watching, the article alone was hard enough to read.

51·2 months agoThanks for trying to explain but I’m still confused tbh. I wasn’t making claims of what did or didn’t happen, I was making claims of what the article said. Which was true. So I don’t know how I can be said to be wrong. But I recognize this is probably a me thing, given the downvotes.

43·2 months agoI really wish you would not keep saying I blindly trusted the article. In another comment chain I flat out said the article may be wrong. The point of me bringing up the differences was to discuss them. It’s very frustrating to be told what I do and do not believe.
Anyway, the downvotes aren’t the part that bothered me as I know they generally get piled on. I was more bothered by the strange aggression I perceived.
Thank you for taking the time to try and explain at least.

86·2 months agoI didn’t blindly trust the article or intend to criticize anyone. I read an article, then the comments of that article, and saw things that conflicted. I thought those things were pretty key details to the story of how things unfolded, so I thought they were worth bringing up for discussion.
How can I do that in the future without coming across as criticizing?

931·2 months agoI’m not particularly interested in watching a video of a woman being thrown to her death.
I just read the article, then read the comments, and noticed differences. I thought it was worth mentioning cause I found that they kinda directly conflicted. I don’t really know where the hostility is coming from here.
Edited to add, if someone wants to explain to me what social faux pas I have committed I’d appreciate it, because I’m out of the loop here.

11·2 months agoI have not seen the video. I am just remarking on what the article says compared to your comment. Perhaps the rope in the video that you see is the one attached to the instructors mentioned in the article. Or, the article is wrong. Again, just remarking on differences between your account and the article’s reporting.

1834·2 months agoThe article contests some of your details.
Instead of being a matter of “trust”, the article states she asked for it.
The young woman, who aspired to become a physical education teacher, had asked to be launched from the bridge airplane-style, with two instructors hoisting her above their shoulders as she spread out her arms.
Rather than the cord being “left” on the ground, the article states
The instructors are wearing harnesses that appear to be attached to a security rope.
To the contrary that no one said anything until after, the article states
an onlooker screams at the instructors to attach her to a cord.
Edited to add, if someone wants to explain to me what social faux pas I have committed I’d appreciate it, because I’m out of the loop here.
I didn’t write the article, I’m just commenting on what it says.

I mean, how do you “average out” accents?
