The Trump administration is preparing to deport at least 150 Afghans over the next 48 hours, first to Pakistan and then to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.

Many of those facing deportation are relatives of those who worked alongside the U.S., and they could face severe retaliation from the Taliban upon their return.

We (The US) flat out abandoned many of the people who helped us in Afghanistan. Packed up and walked out, mercilessly and selfishly leaving them for dead. The cherry on top of the giant hot shit sundae that was the “war on terror.” This is an extra spritz of whipped cream.

I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t trust us when we’ve clearly demonstrated that being an “ally” of the United States is one sided and you will be dumped as soon as we no longer need you.

    What a fucking disgrace.

    It’s a shame.

Many of these Afghan deportees helped us fight our stupid forever war that we shouldn’t have been in to begin with, and they’re going to be repaid with treachery and death. That sends a message to people who might be willing to help us internationally, and it’s that we’re a dishonorable people.

So much of international relations hinges on diplomatic credibility and fidelity.

In a security dilemma, every party needs to arm themselves to deter others from attacking and inadvertently poses a threat to their neighbours, who have to arm themselves in turn. Eventually, some manoeuvre might be misunderstood as preparation for an attack, or some megalomaniac actually does launch an attack and the powder keg erupts into a destructive mess.

Trust and the mutual understanding that neither side really wants war is crucial to escaping this arms race, free resources to build civil infrastructure, establish trade relations and prosper together. Even if the foreign policy of the US was deeply self-serving, it was fairly predictable. For many weaker states, living under their thumb at least offered some shelter - not ideal, but you have to worry less about your neighbour if you know the US will protect their foreign inyerests. And for the wealthier countries, of course, it provided stable trade and access to goods we might not otherwise get (let alone that cheaply).

Trump and his merry band of cunts are pissing all that trust away. I’m not going to shed tears over the US undermining its own dominance, but the collateral damage shouldn’t be underestimated. Whatever international order may emerge when the dust settles, I fear that the collapse of this one will be messy.

Which would make their deportation logically tantamount to (being accessory to) murder.

Hell of a way to repay people who did you a massive favor at great risk to themselves.

Well, they do care, but that’s because the cruelty is the point. Basically, mass murder is the goal - they just don’t want to have to clean up the mess afterwards.

Another reminder that America are no longer the good guys and just another despotic country that can’t be trusted.

… no longer? Listen, I’m glad Trump is opening your eyes, but we’ve never been the good guys. “We did it, Patrick! We saved all of those countries from the burden of their own freely chosen governments and gave them ones that serves our interests instead! Yay!”
