God these french know how to protest so good!
They invented the guillotine, they know the drill.
Looks like a regular French protest 🤷♂️
We in the U.S. have much to learn from the French, including their students.
Yet you don’t!
I’ve seen grown adults in pickup trucks harassing and ridiculing high school kids who walked out to protest ICE. And not as some scandalous anomaly, everyone received it as roughly normal, and it wasn’t a one-off either.
It is hard to maintain a commitment to virtue and justice here. Of course it must be done, but the constant social pressure not to, even just directed at children - it’s wild. It’s a thick, suffocating blanket of ignorance and hate.
The USA had the largest series of sustained protests in human history in 2020. Several of the largest one-off protests in world history have been in the USA in the last two years. Americans protest plenty, and get quite rowdy sometimes, even though we have a much higher chance of being murdered by police than French people do.
The difference? The French media engages this stuff, the American media suppresses it.
You can’t learn from anyone when you’re already the best at everything. At least that’s what the MAGA dipshits tell me.

*Continues to play with the weed.
The pupils’ grievances range from overloaded timetables and overcrowded classes to insufficient teachers and unbearable temperatures during heatwaves earlier this year.
These things have been going on for too long. I live in France and work in higher education.
It might seem like a weird thing to complain about, seeing how many vacations we have here, but students do spend more time in class compared to other countries. We have to start at age 3 here. We haven’t seen any benefits from this yet.
It is a very normal thing for teachers to be absent without replacement for months at a time. Some students I work with didn’t have a maths or language teacher for their final year in high school.
There are schools with more students than desks, with windows that don’t open, with leaks, with bathroom stalls without doors. I have held lectures in rooms where the temperature was 37°C and admin said “bring a fan from home”. On Tuesday of this week it was 32 in my class.
I hate seeing things burn. It makes the protest look like a wild riot. One of the private elite schools also did a walkout and protest… Did the police show up? They sure did, but they didn’t lay a finger on anybody because you never know who their parents are. The press makes this look insane, but student protests have the support of the communities as far as I can tell.
It makes the protest look like a wild riot
This is not a bad thing. A protest that doesn’t offer the threat of a riot is nothing but a parade.
As an American I was so impressed that the students immediately saw though the bullshit system that knows time is on its side. Ots obvious their problems were being ignored but the state can’t ignore a fire.
Thoses are kids what threat do they pose ?
If nothing else, a riot threatens commerce. People aren’t buying things when there’s a riot, even if nobody is looting.
Woah, is this the scene in both public and private schools in france?
Private schools have smaller classes and more funding from tuitions and fees. I have not heard about issues with missing teachers in private schools, but the temperature part does happen. Just looking at what is happening where I live today, most of the high schools are closed to keep students safe, a few are barricaded by students.
It isn’t like there are roaming gangs of teens out in the streets. I have not seen any of the protests with my own eyes because there are no schools between my house and my work (which is a university, but a private one so the students won’t blockade it because they pay to be here…)
Starting at three wont stop as its about providing free childcare so the parents can work rather than being results based. Yes thats awful, its also the same reason schools wont shut during heat waves as it impacts child care and thus workers.
Ugh, I can already hear my parents parrot Zemmour’s “l’eNsAuVaGeMeNt” while watching CNews.
Education national is just utterly badly run. If u r a teacher and wanna do good u wont have the tool to do so. On the other hands if u dont give a flying fuck then everything will go well for you. The only viable short term solution is to simply reshake the hierarchy of that watsefull institution that doesn’t produce anything of value. On the other hand wanting every kid going trough school as a way of national cohesion show their limit since so long. Having teacher being beheaded cause some inhuman retard cause offended is next level broken. The institution still hasn’t learn their lessons. It s not giving 10k prime a year so teacher are enclines to take care of trash that the system will work. I also known most student only use the legetime concern about the state of affair do do everything under the sun except learn. So much stuff to do about everything in regarding that failing administration.
French person here : they’re making it look like civil war.
It is not.
It’s protests, and it should be a revolution. The gov is just treating it like the Yellow Jackets in 2018, putting the emphasis on isolated incidents to justify the use of force and intimidation on young people who fear for their future.
They claim they’ll listen to the student’s representatives and open a platform for students to express their doleances, but it’s all façade, as it was for the Yellow Jackets and the Citizen Climate Convention.
Macron and his goons are the most hypocritical, cynical, lying cunts that have ever been in power in this country, and it’s been going on for almost 10 unbearable years of silent complicity with the far right and poaching poor people’s lifeblood to line the pocket of the upper class with more money than they could ever need in a 100 lives.
Can’t wait for Mélenchon to chase those cunts out of power.
Mélenchon’s party “La France Insoumise”, France’s equivalent of the DSA in the US, has expressed their support to the students protests and has called for its members to accompany and protect them, wearing white helmets or armbands. The collaborationnist establishment is, as usual, using the same old tropes we’re all getting tired of to “condemn the violence” and make it look like Melenchon is responsible for it all. It’s been their go-to for so many years, it’s not even funny anymore, just pathetic.
Media: reporting it like it’s a civil war = the protestors are just winning.
Media: trying not to report on it at all: nobody listened to the protestors and now it’s a civil war.
Lmao
Mélenchon wont do shit since he will never be elected. He s litteraly the most rejected political figure in France, more than lepen, and even zemmour. So if u want something to work dont associate anything with him. He s just an oligarch that won’t let his power go when his time is over for so long. The left won’t be able to propose anything while this individual want to play the politician.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 yeah yeah, sure. Go vote for Glucksmann or Le Pen or whatever establishment replacement is in store, nobody’s keeping you from it nor from your propaganda
Can’t wait for Mélenchon to chase those cunts out of power.
dudes pro Putin in a big way, fuck that guy. For anyone not paying attention
You’re eating the right wing propaganda.
Wtf, he’s been condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from day 1, what’s that shitty american propaganda about? He’s been pushing for a diplomatic end to the conflict whereas other euro countries and the US pushed for war in order to sell weapons!
Trump is the one who’s been rolling for Putin from the start, so point your finger at that fat carrot.
There’s no diplomatic end to this conflict and pretending otherwise is just a way to force Ukraine to make concessions that it can’t. Russia will never return to their borders willingly. They’ve said as much themselves. This is not American propaganda, it’s just reality.
He probably is, but an opinion article by Alexander Hurst the meme stock guy isn’t really the best example of this.
In fact, you might not even need to cite an example. Lots of people despise that guy but not the party policies. Very hard choices are coming during the next election and there is already so much misinformation.
yeah, if you haven’t noticed, running on support for forever wars isn’t very popular
He also supported maduro went on visit there, cry when he was captured, cry when america killed Iran officials. His politics is just appealing to what he called the “new france” which are just imigrate even second or third generation. He s using them as a tool to boost his popularity but plying this game he threw most ppl toward the right than his camp. Dude lied about being from immigration background when his parent where part of the colonial expansions. A lyer that only serve his own goal at the depend of everybody that believed in him
This is what a healthy democracy looks like when the rich get out of line
Reddit/Lemmy always says this but these kinds of protests are a lot more polarizing in France than you all seen to think. People are generally fine with disruption but actually destroying shit is another thing
That’s just a campfire by french standards.
This is why Americans ain’t on shit. The French know how to fucking protest. Americans schedule a protest for a few hours then go home without anything.
maybe the lemming commies can learn a thing or two about destroying stuff while they protest
it’s all they’re good at after all
protest by high-school students over long hours, teacher shortages and decaying facilities has escalated into “urban violence”, the French government has warned, as it said many schools would switch to online classes to protect teachers and pupils.
The pupils’ grievances range from overloaded timetables and overcrowded classes to insufficient teachers and unbearable temperatures during heatwaves earlier this year. Riot police have been deployed to confront the increasingly violent protests.
Sounds like the conditions of schools are urban violence.
France knows how to protest.
They have the ‘destroy stuff’ thing figured out all right. When it comes down to actually getting any of their demands addressed it’s not as good. I don’t remember the last time when French riots ended with any concessions from the government.
Are you being sarcastic or ignorant? I legitimately can’t tell. I’m low on time so I’ll only cover recent events:
2025: then PM Bayrou proposed massive budget cuts to pensions, welfare, and cutting 2 holidays for the sake of “productivity”. Massive uprisings across the country “Bloquons Tout” (Block Everything), government collapsed.
2024: Tractor blockades around Paris (“Siege of Paris”) and across the country forced the government to drop the planned phase-out of the diesel fuel tax break, provide €400 million in emergency aid and announce other concessions.
2018-19: the “Gilets jaunes” riots, weeks of protests including violence on the Champs-Élysées, caused by Macron’s pro-wealthy politicies (abolishing the “solidarity wealth tax” that applied to millionaires, or the “exit tax” letting them run away with their fortunes to tax havens, and several more), earning the nickname “Président des riches”. The riots forced an increase in minimum wages, scrapping of a fuel tax that would disproportionately tax the poor, tax relief for pensioners and other tax cuts that directly improved low-income families, etc.
You can go back and keep finding more and more examples of situations where ACTUALLY FIGHTING for your rights caused the money grabbing elite to actually stop in their tracks - for a while.
And for those that wish to see video evidence of French protest success, this video covers the ZAD de Notre-Dame-des-Landes who have repeatedly defeated the French government.

Yeah, that’s a bunch of wishful thinking. Snap elections were called in 2024 because of the rise of popularity of the far-right. The resulting hung parliament was too weak to push pension reforms changes and had to compromise. The protests served more as a backdrop to all this than the direct cause of any of it.
Yellow wests protested for months and achieved nothing. Then Covid hit and government relaxed some of its reforms to save the economy and the protests fizzled out.
I will give you the farmers protests. The right-wing aligned farmer unions were successful at extorting the government. 1 out of 3 is not bad but it’s really not the ‘world champions of protesting’ levels people think it is. Most of the time it’s just bunch of rioting that results in nothing.
Quoted, you:
I don’t remember the last time when French riots ended with any concessions from the government.
Well now you do, and that’s a whole of a lot more than what most of the world, and especially Americans, do when they get fucked in the ass by the pedoelite.
Also, you’re deluded if you don’t see how the riots and public protests feed the opposition and gives them the ammo to shut down the government.
Of course Bayrou’s was a wimpy government, it was like Macron’s 7th attempt or something, but do you have any doubt that they’d have cut the 2 holidays and pensions and healthcare if people didn’t come out as they did against it? And the next guy who thinks to propose the same will hopefully not have such a short memory.
Yes, there was one I missed. In the same time frame I saw about 10 different negotiations between worker unions and government/companies in Spain that got workers their demands without rioting or damaging property. Right now it looks like after just a week of simple, non-violent protests they will have snap elections. In comparison, in France I see a lot of things burning down but few actual wins. It’s mostly performative and I don’t know why people are so impressed by it.
Nah, bullshit.
France has stronger worker protections, shorter work hours and far lower persistent unemployment than Spain, saying that they do worse than Spanish is, at the very least, highly debatable.
True that Spain also has a very active protest culture, more centered in collective bargaining and less propensity to catch things on fire. That doesn’t make either more effective on its own, they do what works for them.
I didn’t say France does worse than Spain in terms of worker right. It’s absolutely possible that over the previous decades their protests were effective and granted them many rights. What I’m saying is that in recent years effectiveness of those protests was largely diminished. That’s why I said I don’t remember last successful protest, not that there never was one. People confuse the scale or protests with their effectiveness. Another example:
“”“On 4 July, the president of an employers’ organization, MEDEF, estimated that the riots cost businesses around €1 billion. This estimate was based on “200 business which were thoroughly looted, 300 bank branches destroyed, 220 supermarkets that were damaged—of which 25 were burned to the ground—and nearly 1200 independent businesses that were affected”. “””
What was achieved? Nothing. This is the pattern I see in France. Really impressive scale or protests but no results. At the same time I’ve seen many successful strikes in Spain but since those are usually resolved by sitting at a table and negotiating they don’t look as nice on the TV and people are not impressed by them.
You know, these kids are all right.
These students are my heros. I wish we had this kind of energy in my country.
Why would these kids need to be educated? AI will be doing all the work by the time they’re ready to enter the workforce anyway, so how can educating them now possibly help the shareholders?
how can educating them now possibly help the shareholders
They need to have meaningless busy work, they need to be distracted and occupied enough to not think about and not have the time and energy to build community and organize a societal revolution that would threaten the shareholders profits, or feel powerless to do anything about it.
Won’t be a problem soon, now that musk and hegseth have the autonomous warfare command the shareholders will have armies of drones to keep the peasantry away from their fortresses and any valuable resources in no time!
This is the way.
Meh they need to go harder to top the french Revolution
All these comments saying how good this is, but how is this impacting the rich? It’s not. Who was hurt in the violence? Again, the wrong people. Random iolence should be met with directed greater violence.
