Over the last five years, Swiss glaciers have lost nearly 20% of their mass, and 2026 saw the second-biggest loss of glacier volume on record. Experts warn there could be no ice left in the next 10-15 years.
Better enjoy those mountain streams while you can.
what happens when it’s all gone?
The mountains are made of stones frozen in place. Remove the ice and snow and you get landslides, mudslides and generally unstable terrain.
Glaciers can be important for drinking water and for keeping rivers filled with water. They need to melt for that though, so melting is good. When it’s gone there is no more melting, so that’s not good.
