Last night, I was oversharing about some of my plans to make our game room work better as a temporary media room with the Chinese Android projector (not on the internet except for 15 minutes to update its firmware… at least Roku and FAANG don’t run actual botnets, best I can tell).

My AuDHD daughter, who is currently obsessed with Youtube “Object Shows,” though with a lingering long tail of Vocaloid J-Pop, told me, “I don’t know how you ended up talking about this, but it’s probably the same reason I talk about my things.”

    Love that kid.

I absolutely loooooove that. I have worked with a fair few autistic people over the years, and am probably undiagnosed myself.

I always love hearing about someone’s niche interest, whether it’s trains, games, weird music taste or whatever. One guy was into Roman Legion reenactment. He and his girlfriend would spend two weeks every year at a fully immersed reenactment campsite. He’d be a solder, she’d play a slave girl (yes, really).

It’s always a treat to find someone who doesn’t mind endless followup questions and they in turn love being talk in depth about it.

I have a colleague like this, but with Game of Thrones. She’s the best.

Probably the books? I liked them a lot more than the series (read them in english although it’s my second language and a pretty tough read for a non-native speaker because of the used vocabulary)

I would never want to read SciFi or Fantasy in my second language. I can’t tell the difference between proper nouns made up for the book and weird nouns I don’t know. Also reading George RR Martin’s writing must have been a nightmare when you are a non-native speaker.

A vast majority of every content i consume has been english for at least 2 decades. I refuse to use german localization, because it is in many cases REALLY BAD (as in “HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO THIS PIECE OF ART” or “WHY THE FUCK DID YOU USE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL SPEAKERS FOR THIS MASTERPIECE”).

I actually managed pretty well, although i have to admit i had my phone nearby for translation of single words. I actually catch myself pretty often thinking in english instead of german, because pretty much everything i consume is in english, including the OS on my computing devices.

It often makes me use english in german conversation, and making me grasp for adequate translation into german while talking lol

Its because I’m bleeding profusely and I’m incapable of escaping the situation consciously as the blade on my neck draws all my attention and concentration to never. stop. nodding. in. aggreement. to. you.

    “I love Pokey-Mon, too!!”

I just kind of zone out when folks do this to me. Mentally walking away.

I feel like it’s too rude to do it physically.

but usually in my case it’s not nerd stuff, it’s them complaining about their body falling apart or their lack of money.
