My favorite subreddits are the ones like “boy dinner diaries,” where people are invited to pour their hearts out to strangers online, admit to some mistakes or failures, talk about what’s bothering them, big or small… and then get absolutely raked over the coals by thousands of repetitive comments if they commit even the slightest infraction. God help you if you admit to something like infidelity.
I get that this stuff is triggering for people, but I just don’t see the point in sharing it if the community won’t give you the benefit of the doubt or is just going to use you as a prop for their own white knighting.
BoyDinnerDiaries, GirlDinnerDiaries (GDD) and the GDD circle jerk subs are definitetly my guilty pleasure. I’m not sure why Reddit suddenly started pushing them so hard on everyone, it has to have been a consious decision for them.
It’s always entertaining in GDD when the men hate train is in full choo-choo, only for OP to say that their partner is actually a woman.
My tinfoil hat theory is that Reddit is pushing them to steer trending discussions away from class issues and toward some other kind of manufactured conflict, namely, men vs. women. A lot of the comments on those subs seem a little too contemptuous and rage-baity to not be bots fanning the flames. I think Reddit is still trying to shake its old image as a “counterculture” space and become more of a generic engagement-slop site to be even more ad-friendly. It’s also very convenient that Reddit allows profile history hiding now…
It’s sad that your “tinfoil hat theory” is… probably not wrong. This is pretty aligned with what these social media giants have been getting caught doing for ages now.
It might not even be “muah hah hah” (although it probably is). It could just be that those things are engagement bait that the spreadsheet/algorithm likes so it keeps pushing it harder.
We definitely need to side-eye all these manufactured conflicts as you say. It’s really irritating how, once the upper classes start feeling the pressure, suddenly everybody is dividing themselves into hair-color tribes, generations, gender factions, tax brackets, whatever.
The bait keeps the heat off where the heat is needed most! The ones doing this to us!
What questions? Every question I asked in a subreddit got either deleted by (auto) mods, I got a ban or was downvoted into hell.
Reddit became another circlejerk for losers. It could be great!

The person who asks a question gets little to no votes despite the answer and discussion not existing at all if it weren’t for someone asking it in the first place. Sometimes it even gets the gears turning in people’s heads to spawn better discussions and questions with certain lines of thinking they otherwise wouldnt. I swear, people these days act like not knowing something trivial is a crime or is the most embarrassing thing in the world lol we need to bring back the “no stupid questions” thing that teachers used to tell students.
On the flip side, ofc the question can genuinely be bad or is something easily searchable that has a boring topic/answer, but I’m moreso just talking about ones that you’d want different opinions or perspectives on nuanced topics. Too many times I’ve seen people shamed to look stupid for not knowing things that are very specific or is uncommon knowledge that they’d want a genuine explanation of from an actual human being. There’s so many classic Reddit comments like this that wouldn’t have existed if someone didn’t ask shit in the first place lol
More importantly, I appreciate all the curious people who actually make the effort to post because I’d rather them do that than to simply ask an LLM tbh… I know redditors are infamous for being toxic and condescending to feel superior about their intelligence (and I can totally understand why someone would rather not get roasted on Reddit lmao) but I’d rather endure all of that so I can hold onto last remaining bits of genuine human interaction that’s left on the Internet before I ever resort to asking an LLM. Every website will be overrun with bots soon enough and truly nothing will be real. Talking to people on Lemmy makes me feel like I’m back on the old internet browsing forums and message boards in the 90s/2000s again. It’s the only place that isn’t enshitified to make money in every single aspect. I’d rather keep it like this.

Yeah, for real. I don’t think this is a Reddit exclusive thing.
The Hive Mind is a scary thing, and while I definitely think that Reddit is one of the worst offenders of it, it’s present on any social media platform with the ability to downvote and also shows the downvote.
Thankfully on Lemmy, most of the major UIs give you the ability to hide down votes in general. I think Photon is the only one I’ve found so far that doesn’t have the ability to hide downvotes, which sucks because it’s also the best UI(imo) that I’ve found so far.
You could try to use uBlock origin to hide all the elements that have downvotes
That’s a good idea I haven’t thought of trying. I was working on modifying the ui itself to add an option but that would be way easier!

And I really am a novice, trying to figure things out.
AND. I posted a video explaining the project with drawings and such. So it was obvious I’m a woman.
And guess what? I actually got a few upvotes and a few helpful comments.
No one called me a dumb bitch. No one told me to fuck off.
My post didn’t get downvoted into oblivion because I’m a newb. Or God forbid, a woman doing computer things. Which is forbidden because misogyny.
It was quite refreshing and unexpected.
The funny thing is that women made a huge contrivute to IT so there is literally 0 reason for anyone to be a scumbag about women in IT…

Idk man, although I agree that people are harsh, there is a downvote system for a reason.
So in a question community, naturally you upvote questions that are good ones and down vote questions that are bad ones (maybe it’s just a simple google search).
Having said that though, I agree with the spirit of the meme that people can be dicks.
Pretty much every time I’ve seen a question being downvoted on reddit, it was an easily searchable question, something you really don’t need to ask.
There has to be a story behind this meme.

One example I saw recently that comes to mind:
Someone asked in a DIY NZ forum whether to use an o-ring or thread locking tape for plumbing, and the thread was locked by an admin because it was related to a component used for bidets, and installing a bidet yourself in NZ is technically against the building code… You need a qualified plumber to do it… 😆
