They login gated and banned the ability to criticize reddit on r/mildlyinfuriating. Reddit cucks
Quit using corporate social media.
Social media companies and self-destruction, name a more classic combination
The corporatocracy does not believe in the values of a open and free Internet. They have show us their hand over and over again. Why people keep playing when they know they will lose to the house is beyond me.
Because business types eventually ruin everything.

Line is definitely not going up.
The stock market is downvoting the fuck outta RDDT.
All of their business decisions for the past few years have been centered around monetizing Reddit content as training data for machine learning models. Most likely this recent decision is an attempt to block data scraping.
It’s gonna block sign ups. Why the fuck do I sign up without seeing shit?
Not like reddit is relevant these days.
Not like reddit is relevant these days.
Even within the lemmy user community people still occasionally refer to reddit because there isn’t a better source for some things. Outside of lemmy, reddit is a household name alongside facebook, snapchat &etc; people who don’t use it still know what it is. I think your conclusion is more aspirational than currently real.
The opacity is going to make the issue very real. A site like that goes stagnant without new blood.
Why anyone would train an AI on Reddit is beyond me, the only worse platform I can think of is 4chan.
Because it has years of helpful troubleshooting guides, solutions to problems, and conversations. also there is an llm trained off 4chan, gpt-4chan.
Volume, and breadth of subject material. For language model purposes the specific content isn’t really important, it’s the wide variety of language samples from many sources, all in the same data format. You could get similar samples from other platforms, but you’d have to compile them from multiple sources and then standardize them somehow for input as training data.
Everything posted in the last few years should be considered poison anyway, so I don’t know why anyone would pay for it to use as training data.
Because they’re assholes. They don’t care about making a good product. They care about making money. Even though they already have a lot of money, they need more. No matter the cost.
I don’t really understand why new reddit would generate more revenue than old reddit. This is kinda a baffling change all around.
You cannot assume that the people making decisions are rational, smart, people. They may believe falsehoods, and act accordingly. They may be chasing a hidden goal (eg: “I get a bonus if I hit X metric, so I’ll kill good parts of the site to do it”)
I worked at a place where management was like “we want to increase time on site”, and the lead dev was like “I can just add loading spinners everywhere then”. Luckily management was a little smarter and move involved than that, and didn’t approve that strategy.
Websites have to search for new revenue streams. They don’t just walk into a corner of the internet and think “drat, someone already has a forum for that!” and walk away. They come up with some unique twist people won’t have normally thought of and run with that until it stops working. See this guy’s comment below:
With reddit they need to be able to show that their advertisers aren’t just serving ads to bots (although we’re seeing ads for bots now apparently). They have to prove a certain number of real human beings saw something thus the login requirement.
Now, people used old reddit because new reddit sucks. New reddit just shows you the top few posts, and makes you expand replies, thus proving you’re something they can bill for. This also serves the purpose of pushing nuanced, long running discussion down to where people don’t see it. Just look at the cat picture, upvote it, and move on.
And for the record reddit has been crap for a very long time. At least since whoever that lame ass admin was who went into the backend database and edited someone’s raw post, and if not then, then Victoria getting the axe should’ve been a red flag to everyone that you weren’t a member of reddit…not really. I know there were some local meetups in that timeframe. How awkward do you think the AMA local BBQ was? Do you think reddit cares?
I browse reddit without logging in and with an adblocker. From their perspective, I’m a parasite using resources but contributing nothing; I’m proud of that.
Simple, reddit just want lemmy to succeed, so they gave us another shot!
They’re in the final 5 years of their business model.
I can’t wait for the acquisition by private equity phase
FB will probably buy them.
ENSHITIFICATION
Who cares, fuck reddit, fuck Fart Huffmsn
Reddit is just Corporate. But you can browse reddit in Firefox with ublock and this custom script:
! 27 Jul 2026 https://www.reddit.com/ www.reddit.com###app-upsell-blocking-bottom-sheet-direct > .bg-transparent www.reddit.com##.rpl-bottom-sheet ! Prevent scroll locking scripts www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, html, stay) www.reddit.com##+js(rc, rpl-scroll-lock|scroll-is-blocked, body, stay) www.reddit.com##+js(aeld, touchmove, preventDefault)I don’t want to anymore. Too much hustle
Then don’t. I just presented a way to bypass corporate greed. And making the site usable again if you end up on it for research.
I can still browse r/Falcons just fine from my android phone, via duckduckgo browser on my home network with adguardhome dns AND via cell service
That’s nice for you.
I looked something up the other day and somehow found myself in a debate about political violence and got banned for saying violence against nazis is OK so fuck that website.
I said “fuck republicans”

I said something similar to that and got banned as well. so I said fuck it and came here much better here tbh.
Or any other frontend. Nadeko goes down somewhat often, but I’ve never failed to find a working frontend to switch to.
The browser extension LibRedirect automates the process of finding an online instance for Redlib, as well frontends for several other sites such as Nitter and Invidious
redlib.catsarch.com is my go to. It’ cat’s Arch btw
