They all do this. San francisco used to be the old hyperliterate drug fueled counterculture mecca. So they still identify with that, and there’s still like vestigial aesthetic shreds of the old city’s corpse hanging off their beloved Moloch (howl-written in San Francisco). So they see literary allusions and implying they’ve read books as cool. Especially the ones who came up in the 80s and 90s when the old literate hippies could still afford to live there.

But none of them have read more than one book, because one is enough to reference, right? and they didn’t understand it. So mike zuckerberg read ‘snow crash’ and is just doing all the evil shit from ‘snow crash’. Thiel read LOTR. Whoever keeps giving money to ‘ai children’s toy’ read ‘diamond age’.

Because they see is=aught and can’t tell the difference between fiction and reality on an emotional level, being shit heads who fundamentally disrespect the very concept of humanities and have no interiority.

Stephenson is pretty popular there. The shitheaded casually racist voerhoevenesque pithiness makes them feel smart and cool.

Well yeah, they need to be the “alphas” and mark everything they like, especially cultural touchstones, as theirs.

Otherwise, those things would be ours , and that’s Communism! (“Haven’t you read Animal Farm?!” They’ll screech, as they use 1984 as a roadmap.)

They can’t imagine coexistence without zero-sum Thunderdome-esque competition over who gets to take and hold everything away from everyone else.

Of course, ‘environmental’ is an insult for someone like that bastard.

They’ll miss the message of literally anything if it isn’t explicitly right wing.

It must be intentional, at least for some of them, some of the time.

I’ve noticed the same in recent years with Star Trek and the far right as well.

I don’t know how they can possibly miss that the Federation is functionally a post-scarcity socialist utopia.

On the other hand… the Ferengi are essentially a direct replica of the modern US, including the far right’s clear motive to try and force women back to subservience. I’m sure they’d love to be able to force them to be naked all the time while they’re at it.

It’s obvious many of the species in the ST universe were extreme caricatures of specific regions/countries from real life, and the Ferengi were based on the US… But I don’t think they expected the caricature to so directly become the reality.

Because there’s been a decades long effort to make American education really bad. There’s very little ability for critical thinking in that group of people.

i wonder if the NuDiscoTrek time jump stuff was explicitly for the far right trekkers (yeah that’s right i said it with the hard R). First off, the writers shoved as much identity politics stuff in there because they didn’t want to do it. second off it was not the best trek we’ve had in a while, even though the actors tried. AND THEN THERE’S THE THIRD THING. i don’t know how we dealt with the third thing. fouthly one of trek’s main exports is corn. fifthly it might be why they got rid of all of the stuff that made trek trek like the postscarcity and the hair. lastly, and in conclusion, NuDiscoTrek is a land of contrast.

you can add warhammer 40k to it too.

personally i would say its a sense of a belonging and purpose in a group for a unambigious cause that most people crave. but its just that most time the cause is skewed pretty bad by the people of power.

i used to study religion and it feels a lot like the begat section of the bible. i think that’s on purpose.

like, some of the best stories are hidden in there, like the israelites eating so much divinely summoned magic ground bread that they got so sick of it that they complained to their god for divinely summoned meat. and back then their god was not sick to their heart of humans yet so they gave the israelites meat. they gave the israelites so much meat they ate so much they vomited it so violently it came out they noses, according to the bible. no i did not make that imagery up myself. i had the Great Gay King James’s Interpreters’ help. yeah that’s why they stopped using KJV. it was too gay.

There is a reason that Tolkein did not publish the Silmarillion. It’s not a book. It is his own musings on the origins and backstory of the universe he created. It was likely used simply as an exercise to develop his work with no intention of it ever actually being a published work in its own right.

This is a very apt description of it. I remember the creation of Arda, but beyond that, it’s all a bit fuzzy, like I read the Wikipedia page half asleep and dreamed the rest.

You sure you didn’t read the creation of Arda and then fall asleep fully? I did, It’s the worst chapters of the Silmarillion that filters 90% of the readers, the reason I reccomend all readers start with the coming of the Elves.

when reading The Silmarillion, it’s important to remember that Finrod, the brother of Galadriel, is different from Fingon. Fingon is Finrod’s cousin, and also the brother of Turgon. Fingon and Turgon’s father is Fingolfin, who is the brother of Finarfin, who is Finrod’s father. you’ll have a hard time following the story if you don’t keep all those straight
