How is a TikTok screenshot fundamentally different from a screenshot of a tweet or posting an image from instagram? Those are “accepted” definitions of a meme. We get it, you don’t like TikTok because that’s just the “company bad” flavor of the month. You need to adjust your own definition of a meme unless you just want to be the guy at the bottom of a post who was irrationally negative for a wholly arbitrary reason. Not tryin to argue or hate, I’m just sayin that I was that guy for a long time and it’s impossible to describe the relief I feel today knowing that I’m not that person anymore.
For what its worth, Instagram and twitter screenshots aren’t memes either.
This has nothing to do with whether tiktok is the villain of the week.
Also, I give no shits if I’m at the bottom of some arbitrary list. I’m gonna speak the truth, even if I’m hated for it by dumb shits who think ‘selfie with text’ = ‘meme’
Unfortunately, what you think does not have any bearing on what the consensus ends up being. What’s a meme? Go read the book Memetics by Richard Dawkins who literally invented the term and concept. Most people would agree that the modern usage has strayed far from its original intended definition, and yet the modern usage will ultimately end up defining it. Your definition may have been correct in a certain place at a certain time, but now it’s just meaningless and sticking to your guns only makes you look silly.
Hey…
Tiktok screenshots aren’t memes.
Anything memetic is a meme. This has been shared organically with no monetary incentive by users for the sake of amusement. That makes it a meme.
You’re thinking of an image macro. You’re right, this isn’t an image macro.
Its not a fucking meme either.
Colloquial definitions are not prescribed.
A TikTok screenshot is just documentation of someone else’s context.
By any modern definition a meme requires some element of remix, juxtaposition, or intentional humor that turns raw content into a cultural shorthand
This isn’t that.
By your definition, a stop sign is a meme. Congrats, you’ve made the modern word useless.
Meme - noun:
-Oxford
-Merriam-Webster
Seems to fit the definition of a meme to me.
New lemmy post
Title: this guy imirite? Content:
Hurry up and do it lol
What the fuck do you think a meme is?
Literally anything that isn’t a fucking tiktok screenshot.
Behold, a meme!
Good meme lol
At least its not a TikTok screenshot

Don’t care.
I’ll die on this hill.
Call me stubborn, but I refuse to call a screenshot of a selfie with humourless text a ‘meme’
Just the block the poster if you really care
