The study that supposedly proves the human brain is still developing until 25 is being very misinterpreted.

It was a study of brain development through childhood and early adulthood, and they only worked with research subjects from ages 0-25. Later studies have found similar results – that the brain continues to develop – well into adulthood and even old age. The only reason they stopped at 25 was because that was the end of the window that they were looking at in that particular study. It absolutely dos not support the misinterpreted idea that human brains are ‘all grown up’ at 25 and stop developing and changing at that point.

If I may take a leap, I’d go so far as to suggest the concept of completed development is proooobably a misnomer at best. Have you seen how adults act? Just children with life experience.

The brain doesn’t stop developing, it perpetually adapts to its current environment. It’s the reason forgetting is as valuable as learning - if it’s no longer helping you, it gets cut to make room for new info. Survival only cares about keeping you alive to the next moment, not so much your maturity level relative to a younger generation

It’s also why learning how you learn shit best is one of the most valuable skills you can acquire.

One of the best traits we all share is our adaptability. It helps explains both why and how our species was already spread across almost the entire planet back when we were barely cultivating grain.

The funniest thing is, when I ran this cult (for the cliqueiest wood block players you can imagine) even despite me trying to not have them do this they would. People treated the 25 and older crowd like having that extra day or year or whatever of maturity meant real maturity. The 18-24 group rightly formed their social circles excluding folk who treated them as though they were immature for being adults but still a day or week or year or however long too young to be valid. We were and are immature for completely unrelated reasons. You really need to let us own our lack of dignity.

Reminds me of the old rimworld comic where a child instantly becomes an adult overnight and exclaims “wonderful day to perform open heart surgery, isn’t it?”
