Toyota has launched a paid service that allows GR Yaris and GR Corolla owners to add a cooling function for the electronic control system of their car via a smartphone app.
Just watch a video about how brands like Nike and JC Penney killed themselves. The first way was abandoning one’s own brand by chasing a competitor’s advantage and losing your identity. That’s what Toyota will be doing here.
I reveal a disgust to Toyota.

Wouldn’t it be crazy if people would actually not buy those models to show Toyota it’s BS? But Americans have zero willpower. They do it with the iPhone almost every year, it barely changes, they complain, then buy it anyways.

Self driving taxis are going to change ownership (if you don’t drive everyday).
They may also kill the whole concept of pedestrians.
Self driving cars are (ideally) safer, so can potentially drive faster.
However, because of that, they can’t brake as quickly, so that may cause a change in infrastructure from zebra crossings to pedestrian bridges, and it may cause the end of the regular, unfenced sidewalk.
Faster cars means more wear of the tires, so more particulate matter in the air around roads, so shops on those roads would go out of business, because who wants to go shopping with such bad air around?

Sure, but why would they, if they can drive so much safer than humans? This is a genuine argument, and it isn’t as bad as it seems, on its face at least. Why limit cars to a human speed, when they have superhuman control?
Of course, the counter is that it would make walking and cycling more difficult, but that never stopped car companies, who have always lobbied against both groups at every turn.

Laws are also why mixed use development is very rare in modern US cities. Which was also in large part due to car manufacturers wanting people to drive to their jobs.
Laws can be influenced by corporations through lobby groups.

New cars spy on you, nickle and dime you, and have incredibly dangerous touchscreen interfaces that require you to ignore the road to do basic shit.
Went from a 2023 to a 2013 earlier this year, it’s been a wonderful and refreshing change.

Wtf even is this? Does the control system normally overheat? Is it a confusing way of talking about cabin cooling?
Almost every article I found about this is the same repeated drivel that seems either written by a clanker or someone that doesn’t know cars.
The only recent thing I saw regarding GR OTA updates is this article from May about a paid app that unlocks super high performance tweaking that 99% of people will never use. This is all performance mod stuff, not basic features from what I can tell.
From what I seem to be finding if you push the car it predictively calculates how hot it is getting and essentially throws a warning and makes you switch back to 2 wheel drive from AWD. I guess the way it is set up isn’t 1:1 front to back, so you are inherently adding heat driving in AWD.
From what it sounds like, if you are doing doughnuts in a parking lot, the update can recalbrate it’s protection, and make it so your car won’t be over protective.
Jailbreak your phone then jailbreak your car and use the features that are already there just locked behind a pay wall.
My desire to own a car is at an all-time low, and it wasn’t that high to begin with.
My desire to own a new car, as a car enthusiast, is abysmally low.
So glad I never became dependant on cars. I don’t know what my dad will do when he can no longer drive

Wasn’t Toyota one of the first to have subscriptions to access remote start and heated seats?
Toyota has the worst possible take on this too. It’s not just a subscription to use the mobile app, which kinda makes sense, but a subscription to use the key fob remote start.
You can’t use the completely offline version of remote start without paying a monthly fee…
All of the car companies are doing this now, I believe Volvo is not though.
This is nothing new. My 2015 Lexus requires a monthly subscription to use remote start.
Have you tried using the key fob for remote start? The app based remote start is subscription locked but on our 2021 if you short press the lock button (edit: twice), then press and hold the lock button until the head/tail lights start flashing it will start up and either heat or cool the cabin depending on temp.
Tried it and sadly it didn’t do anything
Mine is a triple-press then hold on the third, but yeah same.
