Frederick Douglas was an escaped slave who fought for Abolition.

Back in 1860 he had a choice. He could back the Abolition candidate, who was almost certain to lose, or to back Abe Lincoln. Lincoln had said that saving the Union was more important then ending slavery.

Douglas decided it was smarter to help Lincoln win and get a seat at the table, than to lose and be shut out.

Did I mention that Douglas had actually been a slave?
