japan also not doing well economically. how is this perceived by their local populace?
Japan has an enormous amount of investment in the rest of Asia. This isn’t charity, they’re protecting themselves too.
Probably dog ass. I personally would feel shit on by the gov.
They probably have a lot of trade with their neighbours and if that goes away, it’ll be even worse for their economy.
Wasn’t this govt pretty big on anti immigration? It feels weird that they are putting money on neighbouring countries. Like, making neighbouring countries better is actually a great way to combat immigration, but anti-immigrant politicians usually are fuelled by hate, not logic, so it’s surprising.
Asean
- Myanmar, a complete shit mess and horror
- Thialand run by ex military after a coup, and has a fealty to one of the richest assholes in the world as monarch

- Cambodia, jailed and imprisoned all the opposition, now run by the Son of and ex KR thug who killed the guy who was supposed to be PM
- Philippines run by the son of the ex dictaror

From a cynical realpolitik perspective, Japan is investing, so to speak, on Asian countries so that if a war with China breaks out, Japan would have allies when the time comes.
Although, as far as I know, Cambodia is a nominal ally of China because of the huge Chinese investments.
Cambodia hosts cyber labour camps run by Chinese, where they trick people from across ASEAN into coming there, then confiscated their passports, and force them to run online scam operations with no freedom, like, at all.
