I recently distro hopped from Pop OS Cosmic to Fedora KDE Plasma; omg I love it. There are very small bugs, but i really like that they have a feature where you can self report them to fedora. But overall, everything about this distro is already running better on my laptop and not chewing up my battery, and it just works.

Fedora really outdid themselves with these customizations, like holy crap.

Yea I also just found about those recently. I never really gave KDE a chance because I think the default theme does not look good, but now I kinda think its by design and is only intended as baseline for it be customized similar on how HTML looks without CSS.

Just in case you’re new-ish to the Linux world: The customizations you mean are probably from KDE Plasma, which Fedora just …well, distributes. 😅

So, if you switched to openSUSE with KDE Plasma or Kubuntu or such, those customization options would still be there.

And yes, KDE is excellent. 🙂

Side-note: Fedora does have its own crash reporter (ABRT), but KDE has one, too (DrKonqi), so you’re right either way…

Oops my mistake, I fixed the title in my post just in case. But yes, Im still new to Linux, I’ve only been exploring for about 7 months so far. Still learning the terminology 😅😅

I’ve used Linux for longer than KDE or GNOME have existed. But for as long as they have. KDE has been my home for the whole time, apart from the early plasma days. Apart from enlightenment, which you don’t generally hear much about these days. Though it’s still chugging along.

It’s always been extra configurable. In the early days it was like a flashy open-source CDE. But it’s just grown to continually have more capabilities and more polished. GNOME sort of did the opposite thing here. Which works for some people. Not myself, but some people. Designing the system to be used one way and one way only. So much so that even people like systems, 76, abandoned using them as a base. Designing their own desktop environment called Cosmic.

Yes, this post had me wondering if Fedora ships with a lot of customisations to KDE ootb now (like e.g. Garuda does), because my understanding was that Fedora normally leaves its DEs pretty much vanilla. But yeah, the capability to heavily customise the UX is all KDE - and every other OS that distributes it. Also KDE has been improving its performance a lot! I’m looking forward to when Union themes are properly established - currently theming is just very messy and better just to stay away from

Also KDE has been improving its performance a lot!

KDE actually uses less RAM at idle than XFCE. It’s been optimized like crazy.

Insane that the most feature-heavy DE in existence is also one of the lightest, most efficient major DEs in existence.

KDE Plasma is fantastic, I just recently installed CachyOS on my machine and fell in love with KDE. It’s improved a LOT since the last time I’d experimented with Linux.

I agree, I’m surprised at how well CachyOS runs on this Chromebook of mine, even with all the bells and whistles added!

I have a cat in my taskbar who sleeps when my CPU is idle, and runs faster when it speeds up. Linux is fucking amazing.

You don’t have to compile it. Just right-click on the panel/taskbar → Add or Manage Widgets… → Get New… (at the top) → Search for “RunCat”…

It’s called RunCat, I found it in the built-in widget finder in KDE Plasma. It’s got several different animations to select from, including a dog, a slime, and two rabbits with little mallets making mochi.

Im definitely gonna try it out thank you. While looking for a “desktop pet” i was suprised to find Shimeji in Discover. Runcat sounds like a more interesting option.

Was really excited to try KDE this friday. Apparently some unholy combination of GPU and screen caused it to flicker when I moved the mouse. Oh well…

Arch. It’s on a work computer and reinstalling and picking something else instead of troubleshooting was the faster option. I needed to get stuff done with the computer.

I’ll probably try it on my home computer at some point. But that is left for another day.
