you pay taxes for the same way you pay for utility use. you are paying for the services of your town. police, fire, schools, roads, etc.
your home is only seized when you don’t pay your taxes for years, because you’ve racked up debt by not paying for the services in your community that everyone else is paying.
It’d be cool if that were the case but our corrupt as fuck local government keeps cutting massive property tax deferment deals on huge projects in return for kickbacks. Some are 15, 20 even 50 years no property taxes. The burden of all the growth is hitting a smaller subset of the community and those deals are already set in law. It’s fucked. My property taxes have tripled in fifteen years while my income is stagnant. They’re asking for another increase this year.
