    What percentage of Android users sideload? I would think an enthusiastic minority who are well aware of the deadline.

      Stop using the term “sideloading”, as if it was something bad.

      It’s just installing apps. Google will restrict installing apps and force users to only install the apps that they want you to install.

      That is the same line of argument as “I have nothing to hide, of course you can surveil me 24/7”.

      You never have, until you have, when things change against your way.

      Besides this was the ONLY benefit of going google so far, having “freedom”. And now they strip it away, step by step. 10yrs from now it’s buying apple or this-other-slightly-cheaper-apple.

        I’m not saying that sideloading isn’t important (sent from LineageOS).

        I’m just saying that the population of people who currently sideload and don’t know about the deadline must be small.

        If you’re arguing that the population who will want to sideload will grow after the deadline to encompass a large plurality, that’s another topic.

        The pessimist in me doesn’t see it happening given how many kids don’t even know what a file browser does.

        One can hope though.

          Sadly no. I’m with you there. Won’t happen. And I’m also sure, that google’s warn-notices will make sure to make it sound horribly bad like “You cannot install this app because it is not secure, the risk to your device is immeasurable, it might even shrink your penis!”. Pessimism? Nah, would say realism. That’s what always happen. Grab enough people with being open and great and cheap and caring, and when you secured a sizable portion of the market, cut the liberal shit out and control the thing to death. Normal enshittification of everything :-(

          Hope yes, that’s what rather puts us into the optimism-spectrum…But what do they say? An optimist is just someone who has not enough data :-)
