Some more news about the OpenPrinter project. With a poll asking for planned usage of potential users, probably to help them prepare a first production batch.

I am excited to see the project progress !

Here is their website as well for interested people : https://www.opentools.studio/

I remember looking at this at some point and first being excited, but then disappointed.

I do not remember the exact reason, but it had something to do with how open/not open it is.

Some part was still very proprietary or something, kind of defeating the purpose.

Someone more invested than me might know what I’m rambling about, but I really hope this is as good as it looks at a first glance.

Only thing I don’t get is that paper roll I have to specifically buy for this printer but small size is appreciated

In the questionnaire that asked what you’d be interested in: standard paper size, a roll or both.

I think both will be possible regarding how much they’ve communicated the roll by now and how they might lose out on a big user base if they force the roll on the user. Their best bet would be imo to have some kind of swappable feeder, on for rolls and one for sheets. Depending on how expensive that would be, they might need to sell versions that only contains 1 of those feeders. Maybe I’m wrong and their design has a feeder that somehow handles both.

The roll does seem to limit it from doing thicker sticks like card stock. I’d not cheat to me if they could build a simple page feed

This is beautiful, it’s so simple looking

I bet you could mod this into a pen plotter by simply adding a servo to wind the spool back too.
