Well it’s a bit complicated - from quickly reading Wikipedia I found the following

The San Francisco Peace Treaty,[a] signed between the Allies and Japan in 1951, states that Japan renounces “all right, title and claim to the Kuril Islands”, but does not explicitly recognize the Soviet Union’s sovereignty over them.[2]Japan claims that at least some of the disputed islands are not a part of the Kuril Islands, and thus are not covered by the treaty.[3] Russia maintains that the Soviet Union’s sovereignty over the islands was recognized in post-war agreements.[4]

Ah yes it was that timeline where Japan was doing war crimes, while Russia were the good guys. Oh yes… and back then Nazis were generally considered very bad people!

What I’m getting at is that Japan literally signed away their rights to the islands 70 years ago, and they seem to get pissed at Russia over a technicality (that the agreement didn’t explicitly say that Russia could lay claim over the islands).

Agree that Russia has done plenty of horrible stuff but Japan has done plenty of war crimes too, e.g. unit 731. So I’m a bit confused about what your sarcastic comment even mean - better luck next time buddy.

I was actually agreeing with what you wrote. I was referring exactly to the atrocities that Japan committed before and during WW2. Russia, by contrast, did come out of WW2 on the side of the “good guys”, having sacrificed probably more lives than any other nation to defeat Nazism.

My attempt at irony was on the fact that the contrast with how these countries (and even Nazism) are viewed today is so striking that it truly seems like we’re living in an alternate timeline.

Huh, my bad for not recognizing your use of irony - sorry for being condescending :)

They should have committed to the stance that those islands are Japan and been like “Japan welcomes diplomatic visit from Vladamir Putin”.
