I think most people are into it for the flex factor, i.e. as an indicator of conspicuous consumption and therefore status. A lot of people genuinely give a shit about that stuff. Some even organize their whole lives around it.

Unless, I’m mistaken, the USA finished withdrawal of all troops from Bush’s war in 2011. USA was invited back in 2014 by the internationally recognized Iraqi government while was getting their shit pushed in by ISIS. They are related, but technically separate conflicts.
