Actually perfectly intelligible. A dead assailant doesn’t exist. If you are dead you are no longer a possible assailant.

People are still referred to as criminals or terrorists after they have been killed, why is assailant different?

In English it should read something like, “shoot dead an assailant(still not really ideal) or shot an assailant dead(to death preferably).”

The mechanics of the title aren’t quite right. While most people will infer the correct meaning, some unnecessary jokes will be made by someone as you can see.

The way the title reads now it would be interpreted as cops shot the, already dead, corpse of an assailant that died by some other means possibly unrelated to the police.
