I would argue it’s also convenience as well.

I think most people would tell you they want their data private as default. The fact of the matter though, that many in places like this don’t want to hear, is the majority of people simply do not give a shit.

That doesn’t mean they’re wrong headed or don’t care about privacy. It just means the convenience is more important.

Fact of the matter is if you use a computer attached to The Internet nothing is private. If you think this I have a bridge to sell you.

Yes, network effect goes brrrr. It is hard to get people to care enough to Jump ship to let’s say signal.

About the bridge: I am using only free software. I use the PC to look up info, watch shows(local), send encrypted messages and play games (local and von with friends). Where is the privacy intrusion? My IP and metadata?

Web fingerprinting is a bitch (DNS too), also it’s likely you have at least one non-free blob (mostly software freedom rather than privacy being concerned here), otherwise mostly lgtm

If someone cares enough they will find everything they need to know. The difference is the time and effort.

The sad fact no one wants to admit is none of us are special and no one gives a shit.

I’d say it is analogous to traffic safety, I look both ways before crossing a road to reduce risk, but if a hitman is out to get me, looking both ways won’t save me, but what are the odds compared to a random car with a distracted driver?
I try to protect privacy in small ways, but harbor no illusion about that making me untraceable or something.
