I had never heard of her before, but it sounds like she’s more than earned it.
Certain governments’ treatment of the members of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court is downright disgusting. Thanks to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee for recognizing the incredibly valuable service these two institutions perform.
The White House walls are probably dripping with ketchup this morning.
I’d like to imagine that he orders Marco Rubio into the Oval Office and then beats him in front of the others to send a message.
It’s like there was a lack of learning from WW2.
Fuck this timeline and absentees from the ICC (Rome Statute) in particular. Also targeting civilian infrastructure is a war crime.
Is there a way for the UN to remove the Security Council Veto BS?
The UN is in New York. So no, unfortunately, I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Even if it did, Trump would just pull out.
The other countries will have to make a new one if they want to agree on things. Call it something Trump won’t want to join. Like the committee for free and open trade. And build it up from there. Claim humanitarian issues hinder trade. It’s true.
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, called the South Africa-born Pillay, 85, “one of the great defenders of international legal principles in our time” and said “her commitment to justice and human dignity is a source of hope and inspiration to all those who seek to bring about a more peaceful world.”
“A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time,” the committee said.
And:
She was also chair of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory that concluded last year Israel has committed genocide in Gaza in its military response to the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks led by Hamas militants.
Pillay called Israel’s actions in Gaza “a moral outrage and a legal emergency.” Israel dismissed the report as “scandalous.”
During this difficult time when fascists and colonizers appear to have so much leverage, it’s refreshing to hear truth spoken from such noble figures as this Nobel Peace Prize recipient.
