It’s what I used for an extremely long time, so i just sort of… kept using it. I’ve only recently swapped to 7-Zip. I think the only feature it has that 7-Zip doesn’t is making part files? But I could be wrong.
I can’t tell you the last time I saw one, so… I guess? I doubt they’d be useless, there’s probably one absurdly specific use case that absolutely needs them. But they’re definitely less common.
part files is what made WinRAR so popular with the piracy community. Especially back in the before times, when you were direct downloading and an internect hiccup would cause a download to fail/restart. Being able to download a thing in smaller parts, only having to restart smaller chunks instead of the whole, and then assembling the whole build as one… that’s what made WinRAR useful…
Compression was nice and all too, but self executing part assembly was the standout feature. Again, rendered useless when download managers are built into modern broswers. You can retry a direct download without having to restart the whole file.

You can make split archives with 7Zip, no problem.
Aren’t part files useless nowdays? We have better connections and download managers that can start the download where you left it

the file splits, yea. but it was the recovery records that winrar has that made it become the de facto standard in that place we don’t talk about.
