    I agree with what you said, but gotta nitpick on the Lincoln example. Lincoln explicitly did not want to tear the US apart when he became President. He was an abolitionist but his goal was a peaceful transition away from slavery over generations. This moderate stance was unacceptable to the Southern states and so they went to war because they wanted slavery to be permanent and for it to be spread.
