Sounds like the way to head this off is to clearly announce that any unsanctioned drilling will be taken as an act of war. Say that the moment any US drill cuts Greenlandic soil, the shooting will start.

And I’d recommend that the first shot be heavy artillery at the drill after a very loud and distinct warning, in English, to stand clear.

Or just shoot em all, say they never showed, and thank the Americans for free mining gear. A gift is a gift and even if you’re not planning to use it you can still be polite.

This administration calling anyone a liar is just gonna get a laugh. Maybe suggest they got lost and offer to send out search parties, then make it an actual party. Really have fun with it. Make attacking you an admission that they’re mad, raise the domestic political cost. They’ll memory hole all of it.

Well, that’s a very (current, if not always) US way of going about it. I was opting for a more humane alternative.

At least at first. I’d wait for the US to fire the first light weaponry, and then, if you’ll forgive the mixed metaphor, the gloves would come off.

You’re dealing with an unsophisticated thuggish bully. You need to call their shit in a way that makes them look weak, and punish them for trying shit but still let them slink away. Incentivize shutting the hell up and never mentioning you again.

If you let them shoot back, you need to kill so fucking many to end it. If you challenge them they have to escalate.

If you kill them, then lie about it brazenly and obviously. they’re punished, and calling you on the lie makes them look weak, costing them face on both sides of the border. Literally any evidence they have or claim to have can be safely denied; their credibility hovers around nil; it’s genuinely a weird political moment when one of them says something that’s just true. You’d get Luigi nangione type ‘he couldn’t have shot that man, he was at my house’ type testimony from at least half the country.

It’s the best chance to avoid the need for large scale killing. Long term you’re saving American lives if you do it all quick and clean(ish). Not that they’re not just gonna get spent on some other dumb shit, but it won’t be on you. Return the bodies when the regime falls and apologize for the necessity of killing them after the regime falls if you really want to be decorous about it.

Or Greenland could just sue them in the US, either in Texas or New York, and, at the same time, ban their supply ship from Greenland waters, and request (through Denmark) NATO assistance in order to prevent their ship or aircraft from landing in Greenland.

If any ship or aircraft ever lands, seize the contents and fine the company large sums of money for illegal drilling and operating in a sovereign country without authorization.

Locking people up for a couple of weeks before expelling them also could be considered.

Not everything has to be about guns. Whoever has been hired by this company to provide security will probably quickly understand that area outnumbered by Greenland law enforcement and Danish military.

That ends with a whole lot of dead Greenlanders, while the rest of the EU stands back and does nothing.

That’s why I made the recommendation in the paragraph after that. If they start murdering Greenlanders after the drill, and only the drill, is blown up, that’s likely to get Europe to call foul.

The difference between Gaza and Greenland is that Greenland is a European dependency (or colony if you prefer). This shouldn’t make a difference, of course, but it does.

I’ll grant you that if this drilling is to be on indigenous-owned land, there’s a possibility that there might be an unpleasant echo of Palestine.

It’s all going to come down to how far Denmark are willing to put up with Trump.
