free mancourt servant.bad-taste jokes aside, Badin is a fascinating figure. even though we don’t really know what he thought of his role as servant to the royal family, we do know that they were very fond of him. they all were named his godparents at his baptism and he was entrusted with a lot of their secrets.
Slavery was legal in Saint Barthélemy, though. It is a huge stain on the history of the Swedish Empire.

That is pretty much how it worked in most European countries at the time. During or in the late middle ages, slavery was outlawed in a lot of European countries. But none of that legislation applied to the colonies during the early modern period.
So a lot of European countries had to abolish slavery twice (or more).
Whenever this meme comes up, I like to mention Courland’s colonial empire if you can even call it that
