This is equivalent to Ireland having a constitutional claim on the North until the 90’s. Essentially meaningless. Taiwan is an independent country and anyone who says otherwise is China’s bitch IMO. That includes my country.

It’s not. Ireland claimed Northern Ireland, while the UK didn’t claim the Republic of Ireland.

An equivalent would be if Dublin claimed to be the true seat of the UK and claimed Great Britain and Ireland, while London did the same.

Taiwan and a few islands in the province Fujian are ruled by the Government of The Republic of China, exiled in Taipei. The Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR are ruled by The Government of The People’s Republic of China, based in Beijing.

Both governments call themselves “China” and nearly agree on China’s territorial claim, including the South China Sea claims. The territorial disagreement between the ROC and PRC is actually regarding Mongolia - Taipei may not recognise Mongolia’s independence.

The disagreement is “who is China”. They both only agree there can be one China, so reject any notion of a country recognising both. So either you recognise the Republic of China as China, or the People’s Republic of China as China. The majority of countries opt to recognise the People’s Republic because they hold most of China.

So it is fair enough to answer “is Taiwan a part of China?” with “yes.” It’s the position of every country and the United Nations that it is, as well as Taipei itself agreeing that it is in fact, China, which the Province of Taiwan is a part of. The whole reason everyone simply calls it “Taiwan” is to not anger the Mainland by calling the Taipei government by their official name, the Republic of China.

The reason for this is because of the Chinese civil war. Both sides fought, the People’s Liberation Army had a better land army, while the Nationalists had a better navy. Neither side has changed it’s claims.

Now, if Taiwan were to attempt to declare Independence, which it hasn’t as it doesn’t claim to not be a part of China (in their eyes they are just a part of China which isn’t ruled by the Communists) then that would be a different matter. Which is what the People’s Republic of China actually cares about. I believe the PRC government and representatives from Taiwan actually have regular meetings regarding cross-strait relations.

Taiwan is an independent country and anyone who says otherwise is China’s bitch IMO.

So in your opinion, literally every country and Taiwan itself is China’s bitch. Nobody claims Taiwan is a country, Taiwan doesn’t even claim to he a country.

No, but it claimed the North. You’re deliberately ignoring my point which is that the claims, both ways, are bluster.

So in your opinion, literally every country and Taiwan itself is China’s bitch.

More or less, yes. There are exceptions and hats off to them. I wish my country had the balls but selling some butter (which I’ve seen in supermarkets in China) is more important to them.

China will cut off ties if you don’t recognise the one China policy. Even the US accepts it for trade purposes, all while arming the shit out of Taiwan to defend itself from annexation and maintaining heavy ambiguity on whether they’ll defend Taiwan.

Nobody claims Taiwan is a country, Taiwan doesn’t even claim to he a country.

        Provably false.

Those “exceptions” just recognise the government in Taipei as the government of China. They don’t recognise Taiwan as being separate from China, just the government there to be in Charge of China. They simply just didn’t recognise the legitimacy of the PRC after the civil war.

          Provably false.

It’s literally called “The Republic of China”. They used the pre-1949 Chinese flag. The article you mentioned:

As of 2025, here are the countries who maintain formal diplomatic relations with the ROC as the sole legitimate government of “China”, along with their international memberships: Organization of American States (OAS), African Union (AU), Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), or Southern Common Market (Mercosur).

It says they recognises the ROC’s government as China’s. Not as Taiwan being a country.

          Taiwan has not declared independence.

The Republic of Ireland claimed Northern Ireland, a part which claimed to be a part of the United Kingdom and is claimed and administered by the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland did not claim England, Scotland, or Wales.

In addition, Northern Ireland is part of Ireland in a geographical context. (And this is coming from someone who got back from an Ulster Unionist parade a few hours ago) It’s still not really comparable as the Northern Ireland executive doesn’t claim jurisdiction of the other 26 historical counties of Ireland.

If for example Northern Ireland wasn’t a part of the UK, and it claimed the true government of Ireland was seated in Stormont, claiming the other 26 aforementioned counties, while Dublin still claimed authority over the 6 counties in Northern Ireland, then yes it would be comparable. In addition especially if both governments claimed “you can recognise me but not the other” However that’s not what’s happening and never was the case.

It’s more comparable with North Korea and South Korea. Both claim jurisdiction over each other and style themselves as a government of Korea. Their civil war is on an indefinite ceasefire just like China’s, but they allow countries to recognise both governments simultaneously.

The USA doesn’t actually recognise the DPRK regime as being legitimate, so would hold the position that Seoul is the rightful owner of the entire peninsula. Meanwhile the UK has relations with both, including embassies in their respective capitals.

            Omg. Listen to yourself.

This is the last thing I’ll address because you’re being deliberately obtuse now and just parroting the same, dull, seemingly deliberately naive takes.

literally called “The Republic of China”

That’s ignoring the countries that recognise them. That nomenclature is from history. Same as the Irish claim on the North. If they called themselves the Republic of Taiwan, China would invade post haste. Like this is twelve year old child level obvious.

You’re bringing nothing to the discussion that you haven’t already said and the .uk suffix coupled with such apology for an obviously independent nation smells so bad of a bad actor that I’m out.
