There is lactic acid in plenty of food as well, but it’s often produced synthetically and not from milk products, so you don’t necessarily need to avoid those products if you’re allergic to milk.
In Europe if an ingredient contains lactose (or some of the other most common allergens like nuts or shellfish), it’ll be written in bold font, so if it’s not bold it’s fine. I don’t know if it’s the same elsewhere though?
