A decade ago, Bradley Krae left the United States to teach English in Shenzhen, China. He spends less money and says the has found his own version of the American Dream there.
Seems the average wage in Shenzhen is now $2000+ for a public worker, and yes I guess he makes more, as I suppose English teacher is considered skilled work.
But the problem was the claim about the rent alone was more than the average wage, which it for sure is not.
He was made out to probably be rich, which he definitely is not, he is working a pretty normal job, and although he is probably above average wage, he is most likely still just middle class for where he lives.
That’s probably true.
But this story is about Shenzhen, so it’s irrelevant that the average wage is lower elsewhere, because the rent is probably lower too.
Which was what I pointed out.
IMO the point is more that this article IS talking about someone specifically in Shenzen, and a report (PDF) I found shows that the average monthly cost for a 1 bedroom apartment in the city center is just over $800 USD a month with a monthly salary for English teachers of about $2,900 USD a month as of 2020. Sources are at the bottom of the PDF.
1000$ for rent in China? What the fuck man the average salary in China is like 800USD, they must be overcharging
This is Shenzhen one of the richest cities in China, so average salary in China does not apply here.
From a Google search:
So more than twice what you claim for the area this is in.
As a teacher he is probably living on a pretty normal wage.
Does American teachers get better salaries? I would guess they bring prestige to private schools

…Americans bringing prestige to education? What would give you that idea?
I have found conflicting data on that. Shenzhen isn’t all China though
Oh have you now?

And this is 2 years ago.
And yes Shenzhen is all China. WTF do you mean it isn’t??
He probably meant “not everywhere in China is like Shenzhen”, not that Shenzhen isn’t entirely in China.
That’s probably true.

Exactly. I’m convinced that most people on here can’t read bro

Yeah my thought was that you can do that anywhere if you had a ton of money
