Does anyone know about specific alternatives that are from Ireland or Britain?
As others have said, Oxford, Cambridge, Collins and Chambers are all used in the UK and there are variations of them as well (for example he Oxford English Dictionary is not the same as the Oxford Dictionary of English which is a completely different dictionary published by the same people) but they also all have different styles and rules when it comes to primarily using British or American english spelling.
If I was recommending a single one I’d say the Oxford Dictionary of English, its cheap and it is the one that served me all the way through school as it was the one we were made to get.
Oxford English Dictionary is the English dictionary
As already mentioned, Oxford and Cambridge dictionaries, but you’ve also got Collins Dictionary and Chambers Dictionary.
If you want the genre defining original, there’s always Samuel Johnson’s “A Dictionary of the English Language”.
Well, you can’t beat Oxford and Cambrige. If you want an online dictionary, though, I prefer Wiktionary.
Wiktionary my beloved. I have a hotkey set up on my laptop dedicated to opening Wiktionary.
Sadly I just found out that Meriam Webster is American 🇺🇸
Literally the worst English dictionary.
