    I always wondered why even the minimum brightness setting is still so bright. If it’s not physically possible to reduce the backlight further (why?), then why not mix in some black¹ to reduce brightness?

    [1] I know this is not how you darken colors, but this isn’t a color theory exam.

      I remember rooting my Nook Color (android tablet) way back in the day and one of the things you could do was reduce the brightness below what was normally allowed, all the way to you legit can’t see.

      Now that I think about it, I remember you could do this with custom firmware on the 3DS too.

      I think they leave the minimum high enough to avoid the risk of someone putting it so low that they can’t figure out how to get it back up.

        That sounds reasonable. I hadn’t thought of that.
