“A zoo in Denmark has appealed to the public to donate their healthy unwanted pets as part of a unique effort to provide food for its predators.”
Fuck em, go to Givskud zoo near Billund instead.
Metal.
Honestly, I firmly believe we need some type of control on who can have pets.
Curious how some people lose their shit over this but don’t see the problem in eating meat
Because people develop emotional attachments to pets, but not (usually) to livestock.
But it’s not cats or dogs they are asking for, it’s rabbits and chickens… Pets you can find in any supermarket.
The pictures of chickens, rabbits, pigs, and cows in the supermarket always show them smiling, which makes it seem like they’re happy to be eaten.
This is too complicated for me. Fuck you OP now I’m going to be thinking about this for the next week.
This is essentially asking people to donate their pets to feed to other pets. But how does that differ from offering livestock aside from people that are not farmers having had them?
Also interested in why people wouldn’t want the healthy pets. And the word pet is loaded, for me it comes with a promise of a good life and if you are donating a perfectly healthy animal that is not it.
When I hear pet I think family member, but I guess it’s better than what a lot of people do like abandoning/killing their unwanted pets in inhumane ways.
At the very least, it’s not a live feeding. I personally couldn’t do that myself, even though it’s a natural process and normal enrichment for many animals.
I personally can’t criticize too harshly on the zoo though. At the end of the day, zoos aren’t generally money makers (to the best of my knowledge) and their animals need to be cared for. If anything, I’m more judgmental of owners who may willingly donate healthy pets (perhaps those with unhealthy or close to death pets are more understandable).
I do wonder if this some kind of publicity stunt. It has to be cheaper and easier just to get cash donations for livestock right? Less costs for euthanasia and you can buy in bulk. I’m sure they wouldn’t say no to free food for their animals but it feels like a weird angle to draw attention to the zoo. Maybe some of this nuance is lost in translation between Dutch and English news media.

You mean Danish news media?
Yeah my bad, that’s what I get for writing comments after working till midnight.
That sounds like it’s ok to get a pet even if you don’t want to take care of it for long. You can then just donate it and feel great about yourself. How about appealing to the public to not adopt/buy pets if they’re not sure they want to take the responsibility of taking care of them.
In unrelated news, I am requesting donations of predators from zoos that are unable to adequately feed so that I can use their carcasses to fertilize the garden in which I grow greens for my bunnies.
I have a duty to mimic the natural feeding patterns of rabbits, and greens fertilized in this manner are one way of accomplishing this
