As Canada tightens asylum rules, refugees reuniting with family say they were turned over to ICE and jailed for months after failed border claims
Refugees like Appolon attempt to claim asylum in Canada through an exception to the country’s Safe Third Country Agreement with the US. Under the agreement, refugees must seek asylum in the first “safe country” they arrive in.
But legal experts argue that the US should not be considered a safe third country. They argue that the country’s long-term detention of those seeking refuge and threats to deport asylum seekers to countries where they could be harmed or killed indicate that the US is not safe.
Meanwhile, Canada is tightening its own asylum system. New legislation enacted in March has created further ineligibility rules for refugee claimants, prompting critics to accuse Mark Carney’s government of introducing Trump-style immigration policies.
Refugees like Appolon remain jailed in the US “because Canada conducted proceedings at the border in a manner that was rigid and, frankly, unfair”, said Simpson.
Western governments love to critisize US government policies while either doing nothing or doing the exact same thing just quieter
Democracies aren’t overthrown, they are betrayed. By the conservative, centrist and partially even liberal parties introducing and enforcing policies that give the far-right a head start.
Refugees and immigrants have been politically weaponised for a while now. Governments currently perceived as moderate cooperating with paramilitary fascist organisations is how things were normalised in Germany 1933. We’re loosing our humanity again.
Blaming Canada for not taking on the problems of another country while said country is arresting its own citzens is some weak propaganda ass bullshit.
Cooperating with fascist Nazis isn’t a good look tho. Maybe don’t hand them over to ICE?
Canada isn’t the aggressor here. Maybe don’t have a facist nazi military presence that we have to turn people back towards. That should probably be the first step
Canada rejecting a refugee isn’t the same as handing them over to ICE.
“I didn’t send them to the wolves, I just forced them into their lair”
But for the last four and a half months, Appolon has been incarcerated in a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.
And another case:
He was soon placed in ICE’s Buffalo facility.
Canada is implementing sane immigration reform - it’s certainly not perfect, but comparing any facet of it to ICE is disingenuous and serves only to normalize the current state of American politics
To anyone downvoting this: respectfully, pay more attention. There is a global attack on immigration policy being perpetuated by the United States - it’s no coincidence that the conversation has shifted from US policy to immigration policy in every western country, basically overnight.
The immigration policies of Western nations have been abhorrent and evil for decades. It’s an Overton window shift to sanewash the bullshit that gets desperate people killed every year. So much money has been spent on walls and not an ounce of effort put forth into providing stability to the nations people flee.
The darwinistic mentality of geopolitics and global capitalism are the entire reason there is so much immigration. If weaker countries are ruthlessly fucked over and nothing is done to help them, then you get more immigration. There is no free lunch; our entire standard of living costs more than we pay.
Besides, US immigration policy is something everyone should pay attention to. Every country is at risk of following us. Never think that it can’t happen there.
